“I don’t have children, but I have 17 nieces and nephews, and they more than makeup for anything that I can do. I have a stepdaughter, and I adore her to pieces, and I think about adoption. There are so many kids at different ages and stages that need families.” ~ Lauren Velez

Adoption Month is a month dedicated to bringing awareness to adoption and the children in need of homes and families. It’s a national holiday that aims at bringing good into the world by putting children first and aims to try and bring families together. If you want to learn more about this unique holiday, read more to learn about its history and see how you can participate in its celebration.

History of Adoption Month

Also called Adoption Awareness Month, it began in 1976 when Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis announced an Adoption Week to promote the need for families to adopt children in foster care. From there, then holiday became official under the presidency of Ronald Reagan in 1984. A few years later, in 1995, President Clinton proclaimed that Adoption Week should be changed to a month instead of a week because of the pressing need for adoptive families to take part in adopting children. From there, President Clinton expanded the adoption process by allowing families to use the internet as a resource for adoption.

Adoption Month became a national holiday for people to take part in. Current officials and candidates generally support this effort, and since then, Adoption Month has been proven to be somewhat successful. Since 2014, roughly 50,000 children have been adopted each year with the average age being about 7 years old. However, more statistics state that while 81.5 million Americans have considered adoption, about 23,000 children age out of foster care without finding a family. While more research is still in the process as each year passes, adoption is an important decision to make in a person’s life and should always consider all of the factors at play.

How to Celebrate Adoption Month

If you or a friend is considering adoption, then take research into all the factors associated with the adoption process, the child you want, and what it would cost to take care of the child. If you are ready for this important life decision, then talk with your local adoption center and see how you can get started. Take some time to research what the adoption process is like and see how you can change a child’s life forever. One of the best ways you can spread awareness of this holiday is by sharing it on social media so all of your friends and family members can know what day it is by using the hashtag #adoptionmonth.

Timeline of National Lemon Cream Pie Day 2021

National Lemon Cream Pie Day timeline

1992

Bob Hope’s recipe

The iconic 20th-century comedian spent decades entertaining U.S. troops during his USO tours. His recipe for lemon pie, featured in the USO Celebrity Cookbook, is delicious and easy to make. From start to finish, this pie takes about two hours and all the ingredients together cost about $10.

1851

Popularity grows

Following Elizabeth Goodfellow's death, lemon meringue pie enjoyed a few aliases, "iced lemon pie, lemon cream pie and lemon custard pie," as it took its place among classic American desserts, but the confection was essentially the same.

1840s

Presidential pie

Food writer Becky Diamond writes that future President Abraham Lincoln discovered the pie at an Illinois hotel while working as a lawyer. “He liked [the] lemon custard pie so much that he requested that the cook [Nancy Breedlove] write out the recipe for him, and he told her years later that it was the favorite White House dessert."

1825

Perfect combination

Philadelphia chef/entrepreneur Elizabeth Goodfellow comes up with her “signature creation” — lemon meringue pie.

What is National Lemon Cream Pie Day?

We hope your sweet tooth is ready to celebrate National Lemon Cream Pie Day on November 29. (Today we commonly call this lemon meringue pie.) Although this time of year is more typically associated with pumpkin pie, we’ll take any excuse to celebrate any kind of pie—especially a pie that’s been around this long.

History of National Lemon Cream Pie Day

Food historians believe lemon desserts have been around since the Middle Ages! Whipped cream, on the other hand, is a relative newcomer: it didn’t show up until the 16th century. It first appeared in recipes in Italy in the mid 1500s and then traveled to France and showed up in recipes there just after 1600. Somewhere between then and now, someone had the brilliant idea to marry them together in a way that’s basically sunshine baked into a pie dish.

While lemon custards, puddings, and pies have been made since Medieval times, meringue was perfected in the 17th century. Lemon meringue pie, as it is known today, is a 19th-century product. The earliest recorded recipe was attributed to Alexander Frehse, a Swiss baker from Romandy.

Travel writer Larissa Milne credits chef/entrepreneur Elizabeth Goodfellow for this pie. According to noted food historian William Woys Weaver, Goodfellow was “one of the most creative forces in American cookery during the early nineteenth century.” Her shop was unique. Unlike the many bakeries that supplied bread and daily baked goods, Goodfellow’s pastry shop provided elegant cakes, pies and sweets for Philadelphia’s high society parties.

While known for many treats, including jumbles (an early version of sugar cookies) and queen’s cakes, and individual spiced cakes flavored with brandy and madeira, her most lasting legacy is the advent of lemon meringue pie.

Food historian Becky Diamond refers to Goodfellow as “the mother of lemon meringue pie.” Lemon pudding was considered one of Goodfellow’s signature creations; she is credited with several varieties, whether served alone, or in a pastry crust as a “pie.” Lemons were a delicacy in the early 1800s, but readily available in a busy port such as Philadelphia.

“There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your formal self (and growing a magnificent beard.)”~ Ernest Hemingway

There is something truly magnificent about a wonderful mustache (and beard), something that lends an air of distinction and respectability to its owner. So it makes perfect sense that this humble facial feature would be called to a noble cause, and used to bring awareness to men’s health issues to people around the world! In Movember, let your beard and mustache grow wild to raise awareness for men’s health issues!

History of Movember

It all got started in 1999 in Australia when a group of young men decided that the middle of summer was a fantastic time to grow a beard (seasons are backward down there, remember). It all started, as most great ideas do, in a local pub and quickly came to contain a group of 80 men dedicated to raising awareness for men’s health issues and spreading this around the world. While it started out just focusing on raising awareness for prostate cancer and depression, it would soon grow to include all men’s health issues.

Competitions for the greatest mustache are held around the world, with 21 national winners being selected, and then one of their number being immortalized as the International Man Of Movember. This movement hasn’t been stopped by much, either, in spite of Scots College in Wellington, New Zealand attempting to suppress it by banning those men who were participating from end-of-the-year prizes from the school.

Today it’s one of the most respected men’s health awareness organizations and has branches and participants all over the world. Everyone from sports teams to educational professionals can be found sporting a mustache during Movember, and on one notable occasion, a Boeing 737-800 that belonged to the Australian National Rugby Union Team!

How to Celebrate Movember

It all starts with throwing out your razor and letting your facial hair grow wild! Man or woman, or something less defined, it makes no difference! In Movember, if you can grow facial hair, it’s time to let grow wild! Style it or leave it untamed, color it or leave it natural, wax it or pomade it, whatever you do just make sure you spend Movember growing a magnificent mustache and beard. Movember is a great movement that has accomplished incredible things in the area of men’s health awareness!

Why Do We Celebrate National Scholarship Month?

How to Observe National Scholarship Month

  1. Learn the secrets

Call him "book smart"! Author-turned-CEO Ben Kaplan won two dozen different scholarships. That — combined with a year's worth of AP credits — led to a "free ride" at Harvard. His book, “How to Go to College Almost for Free,” guides students through the intricacies of finding free scholarship money. According to Kaplan, you can succeed no matter where you come from, your household income, or even your GPA. Now a successful entrepreneur, Kaplan believes the difference between scholarship winners and losers comes down to creativity and persistence.

  2. Take an inventory of your interests

Approach your scholarship search as a treasure hunt. There's one for almost every passion. For example, an interest in the food and retail industries could qualify you for $8,000 courtesy of the National Growers Association. If you actually like clowning around, Clowns of America International has an educational scholarship (and probably a bright red nose, too) just for you!

  3. Contact your college (or high school) guidance office

Don't work hard — work smart! Save yourself time and energy by visiting, calling, or emailing your local high school or college guidance office. The counselors keep a running tab of information on the latest scholarships so they can work with you on exactly what's available, their timelines, and qualifications.

Why National Scholarship Month is Important

  1. It's free money

National Scholarship Month shines a light on how to snag free money for college. You'll be surprised to discover there are scholarships to fit any personality type or occupation. For example, do you envision yourself as a future YouTube star? Test your talents and apply for a Video Contest Scholarship.

  2. Play to your strengths

Do you prefer merit-based scholarships or have you pinned your hopes on winning a lottery scholarship? It takes perseverence and skill to match your interests with the scholarship of your choice. If you vigorously participate in extra-curricular activities, but your academic score doesn't quite make the grade, a lottery scholarship can level the playing field. Remember, don't give up — you can still be a contender even if your grades need work.

  3. Sort through digital platforms for the best scholarships

In the past, students searching for scholarships spent hours digging through library "card catalogs." (Remember those? No? Ask your parents!) One of the best all-around scholarship search sites is Fastweb, where the dollar amounts are high, and high school and grad students can look for options, too. Cappex is another winning site due to an incredibly large scholarship database and a large toolbox to help with your search.

When was the last time that you flossed your teeth, honestly? Yeah, you probably have heard it from your dentist just about every time you have gone to have your teeth cleaned (or cavities filled, or teeth pulled. . .), but have you actually listened to the advice? No more excuses – yes, there’s actually a day to remind you to floss your teeth.

Well, it’s not just that – Flossing Day exists to remind you of your oral health in general, but flossing in particular because that’s the thing that you’re most likely to overlook. Admit it, we all forget to do it.

History of Flossing Day

Flossing Day has been celebrated since the year 2000, to remind people of the importance of looking after their teeth. Flossing is an important component of this, and dental floss has been available since the late 1890s. Ironically enough, when Johnson and Johnson developed the first patented dental floss in 1898, toothbrushes were still quite expensive.

Originally, floss was made from thin silk threads, but by the end of WWII nylon had become prevalent. While it did take 102 years to come up with such a day as Flossing Day, you shouldn’t really overlook your oral hygiene for that long. If you did, you’d lose all of your teeth long before that.

How to celebrate Flossing Day

Celebrating Flossing Day is quite simple – get up in the morning and floss your teeth (either before or after brushing, but both brushing and flossing are equally important to dental hygiene according to the American Dental Association).

Flossing day is meant to raise awareness about oral health, and as such, it would be a fitting occasion to schedule yourself a dentist’s appointment, especially if you haven’t visited the dentist in a while.

Some people have an irrational fear of going to the dentist, but you shouldn’t let this deter you (there are even dentists these days that will sedate you so that you can have dental work done.

But let’s say you’ve been to the dentist lately – in that case, you can check and see if you have dental floss at home. If you don’t have any, then Flossing Day would be the perfect occasion to celebrate by going out and buying some dental floss.

Restaurants and cafeterias can observe Flossing Day by providing dental floss with meals that they serve, and managers in other fields can promote the holiday by giving out dental floss to their employees for the occasion.

For the artistically inclined, floss art contests are not unheard of, and this would also be the perfect way to mark the occasion of Flossing Day. Still not sure how to celebrate? Look on the National Flossing Council’s official website for more ideas.

FAQs No-Shave November 2021

No-Shave November FAQs

Can I get a haircut during No Shave November?

Yes, if you can’t grow a beard then you can get a haircut at the beginning of the month and let it grow all wild throughout No-Shave November to show your support.

Is it no shave November or Movember?

It is both. No-Shave November is a US-based charity supporting the same causes as Movember. The only difference is Movember is about growing out a specific mustache, No-Shave November is about simply not shaving at all.

Can you grow a beard for Movember?

No one will stop you, but Movember is about mustaches. No-Shave November is more appropriate for a beard.

Do I have to shave my beard for Movember?

Yes. You have to start with a clean face on November 1 to participate in Movember.

What is No-Shave November?

No-Shave November seeks to grow awareness — not to mention hair-ness — about cancer. The organizers want people to embrace their hair, which many cancer patients lose, and to let it grow — as the holiday’s originators say — “wild and free.” No-Shave November is a fun and creative way to remind folks that many of our friends and neighbors struggle every day with the disease and with efforts to fight it. Moreover, organizers also encourage participants to donate the money they’d normally spend on hair care to cancer support and educational organizations.

History of No-Shave November

No-Shave November was created in 2009, two years after the passing of Matthew Hill who struggled with colorectal cancer during the month of November in 2007. He and his family had already adopted the practice of not shaving during the month of November and donating the expenses typically used on razors and shaving cream to charities that support research into illnesses such as prostate, testicular, and colorectal cancer among others.

The idea of using facial hair to create awareness during November started in 2003 in Australia with a group of friends who coined the term, “Movember,” in reference to how they will be growing out their mustaches and collecting money for mens’ health charities during that month. The Movember Foundation and No-Shave November are two separate entities, but they are both supporting and call for the same thing – stop shaving (or grow a mustache) during the month of November to spread awareness and donate to these types of charities.

In the past decade and a half that the two charities have been around they’ve been able to raise millions of dollars in support of charities that research prostate, testicular, and colorectal cancer prevention.

Listicles National Fun with Fondue Month 2021

Dip Into These 4 Fascinating Fondue Facts

  1. The joy of figugegl

As part of its promotion of fondue, the Swiss Cheese Union invented the phrase "Fondue isch guet und git e gueti Luune" — translated to "Fondue is good and creates a good mood", and abbreviated as "figugegl."

  2. Keep an eye on your bread

A tradition says that if a person loses their piece of bread while dipping into the fondue pot, he or she buys drinks all around.

  3. Manners matter

Fondue etiquette requires no double-dipping and no eating directly from the dipping fork.

  4. Dip and sip

Citizens of Geneva only drink hot tea or cold white wine with their fondue, because drinking anything else will probably cause indigestion.

  5. Don't forget the sides

Traditionally, fondue in Switzerland is accompanied by a plate of pickles, pearl onions, and dried meats.

Epilepsy is a poorly understood condition, despite the fact that it is the 4th most common neurological disease. Statistics show that 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their lifetime. Although epilepsy is prevalent, public awareness is low, and many people are unaware of the symptoms and signs of epilepsy and how it impacts sufferers.

November is Epilepsy Awareness Month. The aim of this campaign is to get people talking about epilepsy and raise awareness of a condition that affects thousands of people across the world.

The reality is that epilepsy can affect anyone, and learning about epilepsy and Epilepsy Awareness Month equips people with the knowledge and insight to support campaigns and assist those who display symptoms of seizures.

Epilepsy can impact anyone, and there are currently over 3.4 million people living with epilepsy in the US alone. Globally, epilepsy is considered the most common severe brain disorder by the World Health Organization.

Epilepsy Awareness Month has been celebrated since 1969, and in 2003, the US Congress confirmed that November would be Epilepsy Awareness Month. The campaign has grown rapidly and is now celebrated across the world.

Initially launched to enable people to understand more about the condition and how it affects day to day life, more recently, the campaign has focused on preventing discrimination and eliminating myths and perceptions that permeate public thinking.

Over the years, more and more organizations have signed up to support Epilepsy Awareness Month, and this trend looks set to continue.

Epilepsy is a neurological condition, which is characterized by seizures, which cause involuntary movements, shaking, confusion and anxiety. Seizures vary, and coming across somebody who is having a seizure can be terrifying, especially for those with limited knowledge about epilepsy. This is why campaigns like Epilepsy Awareness Month are so important.

How to celebrate and get involved: What you can do.

There are myriad ways to lend support to Epilepsy Awareness Month. Events take place all over the world to raise awareness of epilepsy and generate funds for charities and organizations that support epilepsy sufferers.

From sponsored walks and bake sales to dress-down days at work, there are plenty of ways individuals, communities, businesses, and schools can celebrate the event.

The color purple is also commonly associated with epilepsy, so wearing purple clothes and decorating rooms and public spaces with purple banners and balloons is also a great idea.

Another brilliant idea is to get involved in courses and workshops that provide information about the condition and basic first aid training. Many people wouldn’t know what to do if they came across a person having a seizure in the street, and one of the most crucial aspects of the campaign is to encourage the public to learn how to react in this scenario.

Cities, towns and small communities can celebrate Epilepsy Awareness Month by lighting up landmarks in purple. Social media is also an excellent platform for sharing and liking posts about epilepsy and generating a buzz around fundraising events.

5 Things You Never Knew About Epilepsy

  1. Anyone can have a seizure

People with epilepsy are not the only ones to suffer seizures; your risk may increase if you have high fever, low blood sugar, are undergoing drug or alcohol withdrawal — or even if you're experiencing a concussion following head trauma.

  2. It might be random

Two-thirds of people who suffer from epilepsy have no specific cause for their condition.

  3. Vincent Van Gogh may have had seizures

Art and medical historians speculate that Van Gogh's use of yellow in his paintings resulted from xanthopsia, a condition where the sufferer sees life through a yellow filter. Xanthopsia was a side effect of digitales, a medication used to treat epilepsy.

  4. It's a myth that you can swallow your tongue during a seizure

When someone has a seizure, carefully roll them on their side because if you try to put something in their mouth during a seizure, the person can injure their jaw, chip teeth or damage their gums.

  5. It can be fatal

People with epilepsy who fall, lose consciousness, or have lengthy successions of seizures can die.

What is National Epilepsy Awareness Month

National Epilepsy Awareness Month in November is an annual event that teaches people about epilepsy’s causes and symptoms. One in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy at some point during their lifetime. Epilepsy is one of the least understood of all the neurological diseases, yet it is the fourth most common. During this month, many organizations join together to provide information about prevention, treatment, research, and resources to fight epilepsy.

History

Epilepsy, unfortunately, has a long history of misunderstanding and stigmatism. Evidence of individuals suffering epilepsy in ancient history attributed it to spiritual or demonic possession. In fact, Hippocrates, the great Roman medical practitioner, shunned the notion that it was a supernatural phenomena and believed that it derived from the brain, had hereditary aspects, and that how it presented itself in childhood also determined how it affected the rest of the individual’s life.

Unfortunately, Hippocrates wasn’t believed until well into the 17th century, when the notion that it wasn’t demonic or spiritual possession finally subsided. But, the stigma associated with it continues to this day. One of the goals of National Epilepsy Awareness Month is to separate the disease from its historical and false reputations. Many countries still believe that it’s a sign of spiritual possession and, until 1980, individuals suffering from epilepsy weren’t allowed to marry in the United States.

Most people don’t have as much turkey except for one special day in the year. That holiday is Thanksgiving. However, many people wouldn’t consider not having turkey as an alternative.

Despite the straying away from tradition, turkey-free Thanksgiving is an excellent way to celebrate this American holiday. Let’s learn what Turkey-Free Thanksgiving is all about and how you can change up your dinner routine.

History of Turkey Free Thanksgiving

Turkey wasn’t originally part of the traditional Thanksgiving meal. According to historians, turkey may not even have been on the menu for the first Thanksgiving, which dates back to New England in November 1621, when newly arrived Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians gathered for an autumn harvest celebration.

While turkey was plentiful, the fowl that were commonly consumed were ducks, geese, pigeons, and swans. Historians at Smithsonian believe that wildfowl and venison were some of the first foods to appear at the Thanksgiving table.

So how did the United States come to love and accept turkey as the primary bird for eating? Turkey was more widely introduced in the 19th century based off of the New England harvests. Local cooks would modify their recipes because they found the bird delightful and necessary.

Turkey, unlike other birds, is large enough that they can feed a large family and didn’t serve as much utilitarian purpose like laying eggs that many families ran on to function. As for the idea of eating turkey free? That idea came from current movements such as vegetarians and cruelty-free advocates who notice the amount of bird we eat during this day.

While turkey is now a common stable of this holiday, there can be many variations to the dinner menu, including ideas such as prime rib, Cornish hens, porchetta, and roasted duck.

How to celebrate Turkey Free Thanksgiving

One of the best ways to take part in this holiday is to not have a turkey this year. Change it up by switching to duck, hen, or goose this year. If you don’t want a bird, try having a prime rib or a beef tip this year.

Want to try something wild? Try turducken or even go for seafood as your main course. If you like the change of pace, hashtag #turkeyfreethanksgiving on social media and share with your friends how delicious your meal is this year.

They dangle from their tree like jewels, and when split open reveal within a treasure trove of burgundy delight, little bursts of flavor wrapped around seeds that promise endless seasons more of their luscious flavor.

Such was the seductive power of the pomegranate that Persephone, warned by her mother not to eat of anything offered to her by Hades, indulged in six seeds that locked her forever into a seasonal dance with him. Pomegranate Month recognizes the power in these delightful and unique fruits, and everything they’ve brought to both mythology and the culinary world.

History of Pomegranate Month

The Pomegranate has been with us for a very long time, stretching back through history to its first recorded appearance in Ancient Egypt, where it was used for the treatment of various infections and even tapeworm. We can then see it in Ancient Greece where it was considered the fruit of the dead, and was associated with the Hades and Persephone myth, where her consumption of six seeds led to her spending half the year locked in the land of the dead.

Pomegranates are more than just a simple fruit, they’re packed of Vitamin C, dietary fiber, folate, and much more. They’re truly little treasure-troves of health and nutrition, with a reputation for being something of a miracle cure.

Such was its popularity that POM has used it as the foundation of its entire product line, citing anti-inflammatory, anti-disease, and anti-oxidant properties as just a few of its benefits. Such wonderful rich and beautiful fruit deserves a celebration, and that’s what Pomegranate Month brings it.

How to celebrate Pomegranate Month

Pomegranate Month is best celebrated by emulating Persephone and indulging in the decadence that is the Pomegranate. There are endless ways of enjoying the pomegranate, from simply feeling the delicious burst of each juice enwrapped seed as you pop them between your teeth, to a full and rich glass of the glimmering juice.

You can even choose to enjoy them in some cultural favorites, including ash-e anar, a soup from Persia that is based in the juice of this delicious plant. Want something to carry you through your day while providing a tart explosion? Buy them dried and mix them into your trail mix or snack on them throughout the day.

History of Peanut Butter Month

You can’t talk about the history of Peanut Butter Month without talking about the history of peanut butter, and by extension, peanuts. Peanuts are a legume that originates in South America, and has been domesticated for 7600 years. Can’t be surprised that a little legume (not a nut!) that’s been around for so long has proven to be so incredibly popular the world round.

While the origins of peanut butter can be traced back to the Aztecs and Incans, the modern history of it starts in 1884, when it was patented by a chemist by the name of Edson. His whole purpose in developing it was to ensure that those who had issue chewing hard foods would be able to have a delicious way to get the nutrition they needed.

Since then they’ve exploded onto the culinary scene in every possible permutation, and can be found in some variation in some form in every meal. In 1995 Peanut Butter Lovers month came into existence and has been celebrated ever since in a month-long peanut buttery bacchanal!

How to Celebrate Peanut Butter Lovers Month

Considering how flexible peanut butter is as an ingredient, Peanut Butter Lovers Month is your opportunity to start putting more of this fantastic legume into your meals. Every day you can add in one peanut butter themed meal into your diet. Whether it’s a simple Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwich for lunch, or a savory and delicious pad thai, there’s tons of ways for you to incorporate it.

Perhaps the best way to make this a fun and social event, is to get friends and family together every week with their best and most creative peanut butter recipes. You’d be amazed at exactly what you can come up with, and just how many different types of meals there are that it can be included in.

What is National Peanut Butter Lover’s Month?

This November, we are excited to celebrate National Peanut Butter Lovers Month — the perfect time to satisfy all of your peanut butter cravings. We love this creamy and sometimes crunchy concoction so much we need an entire month dedicated to our affection for this delicious delicacy. We’ve collected some fun peanut butter facts and ideas that are sure to help you celebrate to the fullest.

History of National Peanut Butter Lover’s Month

The invention of peanut butter has long been falsely credited as belonging to George Washington Carver, who was an inventor and also a scientist determined to improve the welfare and nutrition of America’s farmers. This is partly because Mr. Carver was a huge proponent of peanuts as a source of protein and energy, and created a list of foods and recipes for farmers to use that were centered around peanuts.

But Carver did not actually invent peanut butter. By the time he was advocating for peanuts as a supportive, alternative crop (around 1916), peanut butter had already been popularized. In fact, in 1840 a New Yorker named Rose Davis started making peanut butter after her son saw Cuban women grinding the nuts and spreading them on bread. Additionally, evidence has surfaced that Aztecs may have even done something similar as early as the 15th century.

But, the first person credited with creating peanut butter was a French-Canadian man named Marcellus Gilmore Edson, who created it in 1884. Fourteen years later, Kellogg (the man of cereal fame) created the first streamlined process to mass produce the product and it was quickly considered a snack for elite society members as it was served as a protein source in wealthier hospitals. Since then, it’s grown to be more widely available, with PB&J becoming the official sandwich of, well, everyone who wants a quick, affordable, and protein-filled snack.

We’re all full of stories, each of us with our own tales to tell, but we never quite seem to find the time to make it happen, do we? There’s always too much to do today, the feeling isn’t right, the story just isn’t there, or we just don’t feel good enough.

Thoughts like these are why some of the most influential books in history never got written, and procrastination is the great killer of artistic expression. National Novel Writing Month, known as NaNoWriMo by its adherents is your opportunity to bring out your inner tales!

History of Novel Writing Month

Novel Writing Month brings your excuses to a halt by encouraging everyone to take this one month of the year to try their hand at the grand art of storytelling. 50,000 words in one month is the goal, a number that seems quite daunting until you realize that over a span of 30 days it’s just 1700 words a day. To put that into perspective, that’s about three times the length of this article!

Established in 1999, NaNoWriMo was July back then, and the heart of it was the magical city of San Francisco. That year there were only 21 people involved, and they were at the heart of a revolution, though perhaps not the heart of the one they imagined. Fifteen years later thousands of people all over the world are participating in this amazing event, resulting in volumes of creative expression unlike the world has ever seen.

How to celebrate National Novel Writing Month

NaNoWriMo has a thriving and supportive community of people who love getting together, physically and digitally, to support each other and offer encouragement and inspiration to drive the creative endeavor. At homes, restaurants, coffee shops, libraries, and schools all over the world, NaNoWriMo takes all these places by storm. You can pop into nanintoo.org and find yourself a local “write-in” near you to help you get your write on!

Obviously, whether you join these folks or not, the whole point of NaNoWriMo is writing. So dig an idea out of your head and start writing, and hold yourself to 1700 words a day throughout the entire month of November. Don’t worry about editing, rewriting, or any of the little fiddly things one does when finishing a novel, that all can wait until after you’re done. The goal now is to get 50,000 words down on the page by the end of the month!

Don’t let November go by without taking your greatest novel idea and turning it into a reality!

We don’t much care what you call it, the cashew is one of nature’s true delights. It needs a little care to be able to achieve its greatest properties, like all good things, but when you finish harvesting and roasting it there are few things in life as delightful as a cashew nut. Cashew Day encourages you to go out and enjoy this delicious seed in any of its myriad of forms.

History of Cashew Day

Let’s start with this, cashew trees can get big… really big. The world’s largest cashew tree can be found in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, and covers well over 81,000 sq ft. To put that into perspective that’s a tree that covers 1.8 acres, or nearly 70 times that of a normal cashew tree. Truly a monumental tree dedicated to providing delicious cashew nuts to the people of the world. Cashews are used in all sorts of creations, from a rich creamy nut butter to toppings for ice cream, and just about anything in between.

They’re roasted and salted for a handy snack, and often are put inside of cookies as well. There’s even research that shows that this remarkable seed may, in fact, be an effective antidepressant, were one to consume two handfuls of them a day. Cashew Day was established to encourage us to enjoy this crunchy, flavorful nut any way you want to!

How To Celebrate Cashew Day

How about you start by picking up a container of cashew butter and start the day with a piece of toast spread with that wonderful concoction? Pick up a package of cashews and munch on them throughout your work day, and keep them in the car to help stave off the munchies. They can serve as an excellent addition to a dinner salad, or you can sprinkle them on your ice cream for dessert. Can’t think of any other ways to enjoy cashews? Maybe it’s time to get some friends together and brainstorm a cashew themed day of feasting! After all the only thing better than delicious food is delicious food with friends!

History of Epilepsy Awareness Month

Rich and powerful, espresso is a nitro-boost to your day and a go-to for coffee drinkers looking for a way to get through those long hard days and nights. It is a refinement of coffee, distilled down to its most potent elements and delivered in special cups that should have a warning label that reads “High Vibration and Caffeine Jitters Ahead”. Espresso day celebrates the history of this delicious and powerful solution to an otherwise dreary day.

History Of Espresso Day

In Turin, in 1884 an incredible new innovation was developed that would change the way work would be done for all of history. No more would tired laborers have to rely on pure willpower to get them through the day or lean on the watered-down attempt at caffeination that was normal coffee and tea. Instead, thanks to the innovative methods of Angelo Moriondo coffee had seen a new age of enlightenment, as his new machine found a way to separately control the passing of steam and water through the coffee. This innovation made it possible to extract the fullest possible potential from the humble coffee bean.

Espresso Day was created to honor this invention and the wonderful man who made it all possible. True, the machine has undergone multiple upgrades and innovations since then, with homemade espresso machines now being available, and the latte is now one of the most popular methods of imbibing this drink. From Turin, Italy this beverage spread throughout the world, earning a place of prominence in Europe, the USA, and eventually the world at large.

How To Celebrate Espresso Day

Celebrating Espresso Day is as simple as skipping on down to your local caffenation station, be it a Starbucks, Tim Horton’s, or whatever your local flavor of coffee shop is. Order yourself the strongest drink on the menu, a triple-shot espresso if they have them, and raise a small ceramic glass of high-powered octane the those in attendance. Toast Angelo Moriondo and his works, and let all who will listen know that it is he who drives the modern worker and increases production. Then stop on the way home and buy yourself your own personal espresso machine, because weekends need coffee too.

Why Do We Celebrate National Espresso Day?

National Espresso Day Activities

  1. Learn the "4 Ms" of espresso (spoiler: Italian lesson ahead)

Remember to use a lot of molto Italiano hand gestures when saying these words: la macinazione — the correct, very fine grinding of the coffee beans
la macchina — the espresso machine itself
la miscela — the coffee blend, often a mixture of high-quality Brazilian beans, but with many variations
la mano — the skilled hand of the person making the coffee

  2. Ask your barista for a demonstration

Now that you know the proper terminology, if you're on friendly terms with your neighborhood barista, ask if he or she will show you how the professionals make the perfect cup of espresso. (Just don't do this during the morning rush.) This might also be a great chance for a friend with a new espresso machine to show it off to you.

  3. Enjoy espresso even if you're not a coffee drinker

Try popping a few chocolate-covered espresso beans (in moderation — they pack a punch). If you like a subtle hint of coffee flavor, try adding espresso to a cup of hot chocolate for a mocha treat. Are you a baker? A little espresso powder (not the brewed drink) mixed into chocolate frosting really amps up the sophistication level. Hmm, there seems to be a theme here...chocolate plus espresso equals a match made in heaven.

Why We Love National Espresso Day

  1. It's an all-day wake-up call

Whether you like your espresso straight up or blended into a latté or cappuccino, just a single shot can perk up even the slowest morning mover. Adding espresso to a chocolate smoothie creates a luscious mocha pick-me-up in the afternoon, and espresso also makes the perfect after-dinner drink, especially if you're having tiramisu for dessert.

  2. It gives us that Euro-chic air

One sip of steaming hot espresso, and we're transported to an Italian piazzo, surrounded by ancient cobblestones, weathered statues, cypress trees, and hundreds of years of history. (Talk about traveling on a budget!) And those tiny cups that espresso is traditionally served in? They're simply molto alla moda (very trendy).

  3. It’s an excuse to try something new (do we need an excuse?)

Are you a strict black coffee person? Try a shot of espresso instead. If you like your morning brew a little lighter, order a latté (you can choose how many shots you want added to that steamy, foamy milk). Or how about espresso added to hot cocoa for a sophisticated mocha drink?

What’s the difference between espresso and just plain coffee? According to professional baristas, it doesn’t really matter what kind of bean you use, or how it’s roasted — it’s all in the way the beans are brewed. Forcing pressurized water through finely-ground coffee beans produces a concentrated brew with its signature delicate foam. This foam, or crema, to use its proper name, contains concentrated sugars and oils from the beans, adding a light sweetness that helps balance out the bitterness. Grab an espresso on November 23 to taste the difference for yourself!

Why Do We Celebrate Diabetic Eye Disease Month?

How to Observe Diabetic Eye Disease Month

  1. Get tested for diabetes

If you suspect you may have diabetes or you have unsettling eye disease symptoms, use Diabetes Eye Disease Month as a way to conquer your anxiety and get proactive about your health. Various tests, including fasting or drinking a sugary, high glucose solution and then taking a blood test, will give you an accurate reading of the results. There are also certain factors during an eye exam that may indicate diabetes if you have not been formerly diagnosed. Whichever way you go, use this month to take action.

  2. Post an eye exam reminder on social media

Cute pictures of kitty cats and puppy dogs may relieve our boredom on social media but use your platforms to save eyesight in November. Remind your friends, and friends of friends, that November is Diabetic Eye Disease Month. Throw up some stats and maybe some links to organizations that are working on this issue. In December, you can go back and re-post your photos of doggies and kitties.

  3. Offer to take someone to their eye exam

Being a friend includes being there for someone, even accompanying them to an eye exam. It seems like a little thing but if your eyes seem to be playing tricks on you, bring along a friend for support. After all, if your eyes are dilated after the exam, you may need a ride home.

Why Diabetic Eye Disease Month is Important

  1. Diabetic eye disease is scary

Think about all the ways you use your eyes, and now think about how you would feel if you were to gradually lose your eyesight. Diabetic eye disease, also known as diabetic retinopathy, is a group of eye conditions affecting people with diabetes. These conditions include cataracts (clouding of the eye’s lens), glaucoma (elevated pressure inside the eye), and macular swelling (optic nerve damage). The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases suggests seeing your doctor if you have blurry or frequently changing vision, experience dark areas or vision loss, or if you see "floaters" or flashes of light.

  2. All types of diabetes can trigger eye disease

It's just a fact that if you suffer with diabetes, you have a greater chance of having an eye disease than someone who doesn't. Every type of diabetes makes you vulnerable, which is why early detection with regular eye exams is key. People with types 1 and 2 diabetes need annual exams. Pregnant women with both types 1 and 2 need exams prior to pregnancy or at least during the first trimester. Only expectant mothers with gestational diabetes aren't required to have eye exams because they can't develop diabetic eye disease during pregnancy

  3. Prevention means dilating your eyes

If you have diabetes, you need a more in-depth exam where the eye doctor dilates your eyes. This means you will receive drops in your eyes to make the pupils larger. This allows the doctor to fully see the back of each eye including the retina, blood vessels, and optic nerve. After your eyes are dilated, don't panic if your vision is slightly blurry for a couple of hours — but make sure to arrange for transportation.

Diabetic Eye Disease Month focuses attention on keeping our eyes healthy. Each November, vision care organizations, physicians, ophthalmologists, and opticians share resources on how diabetes can decrease your sight. According to the National Eye Institute, over 7 million Americans are impacted by diabetic retinopathy, a condition involving chronic high blood sugar that damages the retina’s blood vessels. If you have diabetes, learn how to properly maintain your eyesight. If not, err on the side of caution and schedule your annual eye exam.
